crayons
The crayon drawings on my bedroom walls were mostly of the neighbourhood. My father had given up on getting me to stop, and perhaps he saw in those images something in me. Instead of trying to keep the walls clean, he tried to refocus my output. On my fourth birthday my dad presented me with a complete artist kit (pastels, paints and paper), and he threw in an inexpensive Kodak Instamatic camera. As beautiful as the entire kit was, it was the camera that allowed me to capture my imagination and my surroundings. It enabled me to feed my curiosity and my need to explore and understand how and where others live. That first camera taught me to see and to creatively express the thoughts and ideas I got through its use.
A glimpse of a distant place, the park behind the house partially obscured by the neighbour’s tree. It became my goal to capture all of those images even if I was limited to a single roll of film a week. As I grew older and both my equipment and skills grew, a trail of images became the map of where I had been and where I wanted to go. The world opened up as I explored neighbourhoods across oceans and continents. Initially quick compositions became more ponderous as, before the shutter was tripped, the camera forced an investigation of the scene and what lay beyond. Still today the act of composing forces me to look, to see, to attempt to understand the intent of those who created that space, to learn why they did what they did to define it.
In these spaces are always people. Capturing them within the places they inhabit also captures their lives and how they choose to live. The curiosity that I explore through the camera exists even when I have no camera with me. I am fascinated by the lives of people in many areas of the world. The education I have gained through my travels has inspired me to celebrate the differences between my life and theirs, and to expand my thoughts and ideas through what I learn from them. The essence of these experiences inform and conceptualize my ideas which are creatively expressed through the images captured on film and the built form designs I create.
During a critique, a visiting architect who was a member of the panel reviewing my work told me that my conceptualization and design of communal housing is flawed. “Canada has a lot of land,” he told me. This criticism speaks volumes to the issues we face today. As I move toward the goal of becoming a practicing architect, I am particularly interested in designing built form that responds to this tendency of urban sprawl and unsustainable building design. As much as I need to explore and constantly feed my curiosity, I want to solve problems, to find solutions to these challenges, perhaps a simple idea culled from the thousands I have gotten over the years of exploring and seeing will respond to these issues.
An image of something is made up of details. The details combine to tell a story. A cursory look may reveal a short story but a whole narrative can unfold by seeing the details. Without knowing it at the time, that Instamatic provided me the exact tool I needed to learn to look, to see beyond the short story. I am able to see the narrative and derive, from that and my experiences, ideas which I continue to express. Instead of using crayons on the wall of my bedroom, I use pencils, paper and a mouse to respond to challenges, pursue the definition of space and feed my continued curiosity.

A lifelong photographer, Keith has gone from a Kodak Instamatic to 5 x 7 view cameras to digital SLRs. Keith’s photographs have been displayed in various galleries throughout Ottawa, Montreal and Calgary.
An avid cyclist, Keith maintains a herd of bicycles ranging from a 1940s-era BSA to a carbon fiber road bike that weighs less than the seat of the BSA.
An experienced coffee drinker, Keith sips his brew black and strong, often while pondering the phenomenology of architecture.
tech
This website was developed using inDesign for the layout and dreamweaver for html and css’s. All images were adjusted using photoshop and lightroom. Film images were scanned using epson scanners. The backgrounds and icons were created in illustrator.
The site is a bit of a html playground for me. I am pushing more into CSS and Javascript. The lack of consistency between pages reflects that as I try different approaches for different ways to display the content.
Extensive photographic equipment experience spanning from digital to view cameras, including: Canon 30D, 5D, G9, & 1n. Hasselblad 500cm & 503 cw, Linhof Super Technika 4 X 5 and Burke and James 5 X 7 view cameras. Never looking back on film, and enjoying its resurgence, I continue to process my own utilizing Jobo processors and Omega chromega enlargers./p>
